Abstract

Phytochemical analysis of aerial parts of eight autochthonous Genista L. taxa (brooms; Fabaceae: G. germanica, G. januensis, G. pilosa, G. radiata, G. sagittalis, G. sericea, G. sylvestris ssp. dalmatica and G. tinctoria) from natural populations in Bosnia and Herzegovina was performed. Emodin was identified in the genus for the first time, and coumarins, fatty acids, saponins, steroids, tannins and terpenoids were detected in some taxa. Spectrophotometric analysis revealed significant differences in phenol, flavonoid, phenolic acid, and alkaloid contents, as well as in antioxidant activity among the studied taxa. Hierarchical clustering analysis produced two main groupings, with G. januensis and G. pilosa forming a distinct cluster. The findings suggest further investigation into Genista as a source of bioactive compounds.
