Leachate of landfill Smiljevići (Sarajevo, BiH) and their environmental status

Abstract

Physicochemical parameters of leachate from the 60-year-old Smiljevići landfill in Sarajevo were analyzed and compared with local legislation and global baseline values. While many parameters exceeded permitted limits according to local regulations, concentrations were found to align with typical global values for landfill leachate. The study notes that the surrounding area is now relatively densely populated and that Lepenica Creek, which receives untreated landfill leachate, has a small water capacity particularly in summer, complicating environmental assessment and increasing potential ecological risk.
